2017 SISU Iron Recaps

by Ryan Tworek: Here’s a summary of my SISU Iron for 38.5 hours this past weekend! This weekend, I participated in my fourth SISU Iron. Soo far, I have completed all four Iron’s I have participated in. It is a special event and the people are amazing. The challenges push me and there are multiple times I have wanted to quit. This may be a long write up, but I can ensure you can finish it in less time than I spent doing any task. 97 Registered, 65 Started and 35 Finished This ...

2016 SISU Iron - My Summary

By Ryan Tworek (3x SISU Iron Finisher). Here’s my experience of the SISU Iron. I want to give you an idea of what it’s like to do an event that lasts for 38 + hours. For the Iron, 108 paid for registration, 67 showed up and 15 finished. Here’s my experience as a 3x finisher of the Iron. The first thing you do is register. As soon as registration was open after the 2015 Iron, I signed up and put it on the calendar. Registration for 2017 came out yesterday and I am registered. In ...

SISU Athletes on Fire Podcast

Most podcasts, like 85%... Most podcasts never make it to episode 7. I thought that was a ridiculous number until we started accepting network partners. That is, partners that are podcasting with us because of a shared vision. Low and behold, most of them fell off not after 4 or 5 shows. After one or two they fizzled. I get it, it's tough to get consistent with anything new. That's why this post is dedicated to giving major props to Team SISU and SISU:RADIO. New athletes... Re...

2016 SISU Iron Media Challenge

For this year's SISU Iron event, participants were asked to reach out to the media (TV, newspaper, etc.) to talk about their participation in the 30+ hour endurance event and why they are doing it.  Here are a few of the submissions we received back at Team SISU HQ.     Participants clearing this challenge will get a special reward (TBD) during the Iron.     Janice Marie Ferguson & Li-Ping Chew "2 Coast residents prepare for competition" b...

SISU Pro Team Member, Glenn Racz's Recap of the 2015 Spartan Race World Championship

23rd place. 2:51:30. Around 3,800' elevation gain and 14.7 miles per my Garmin. I felt good during the quick start running behind Hunter McIntyre and Chad Trammell and at least a dozen others. The monkeybars at around mile 1 were still frosty/icy and I almost failed it due to cold/numb fingers. I'm not surprised so many guys failed it. After this the big hill ascent began and the field spread out. I was probably somewhere around 15-20th place near Brakken Kraker and Isaiah ...

You’re Doing It Wrong: There’s a Better Way to Build Functional Fitness, Avoid Injury, and Improve Performance

by Matt Trinca It’s inevitable.  If you’re an obstacle racer, or extreme endurance racer, you’re going to get hurt.  It may not have happened to you yet, but chances are that you’re just one tenuous step away from disaster.  Most likely, it will come during competition. My time came during the Gladiator Rock n’ Run in Irvine, California in the Spring of 2012.  I was determined the run the 5k obstacle course multiple times, in order to train for the first-...

2015 SISU Iron Reviews

Much has already been written in social media about the 2015 SISU Iron.  Unfortunately, this is often quickly buried by a barrage of other postings.  So, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some posts from a select few Iron participants.  These folks represent some of the best performers at the event.   As you may, or may not, know, we do not have a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place at the Iron.  We have the Iron Man and Iron Woman, which are voted on by the other fi...

Kevin makes fire with a bow drill

Kevin Kierce wants to share with you how to make fire, using a bow drill.  Good job, Kevin!     (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); I thought this would be the perfect place to share this, if any of m...

SISU Iron hints and tips from a Team SISU volunteer - Laura Johnson

Hello Cream Puffs! Let me introduce myself. My name is Laura. I’m a registered nurse and I am one of the first aid volunteers for the 2015 IRON. This is my 3rd year working with SISU and this event. My event resume is extensive and includes the “Summer of Fun” Irvine Mud Run, the Bubble Run, the ROC (ridiculous obstacle course) race and about a half a dozen virtual 5K’s. The IRON is something that I look forward to as it never ceases to make me chuckle. For those who hav...

2015 SISU Iron Essay Contest Winners

For this year's SISU Iron, all entrants were asked to write an essay 200 words or less, about why they wanted to do the event.  The essays had to be in English, and they could contain no spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.  The essays were judged by SISU Staff member, Steffen "Cookie" Cook.  12 winners were chosen.  Their entries have been posted below.  These winners will enjoy "special priveleges" in the beginning of the SISU Iron event. The 2014 SISU 24 - Choose Your Own Adventure

Last weekend 26 participants, 5 volunteers, and 3 SISU staff hiked up to Henninger Flats for our 2nd SISU 24 event.  This year’s event had a last minute change in venue that sent the staff scrambling to figure out a new plan and some new challenges for the racers.  Altadena proved to be a perfect match for the event format and provided an amazing backdrop with lots of elevation and some gorgeous views. The challenges began even before the official start of the event, as v...

OCR's "Fittest Man"?

A recent article from Spartan Race, touted Team SISU Founder Daren de Heras as one of obstacle racing's fittest men.  And while Daren, himself, scoffs at the acclaim, there is no doubting that he has taken on some of the toughest challenges that obstacle racing has to offer.  Daren has completed in 5 Death Races, including the Summer, Winter, and Team events, completing one as an "unofficial" finisher and one as an "official" finisher.  He has also competed in the Fuego y Agua ...

You’ll Never Know Your Limits, Until You Test Them

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved."  -- Helen Keller.   My body may have returned from Vermont, but my head is still spinning with thoughts about my Death Race experience last weekend.  2014 was the "Year of the Explorer", and it did not disappoint.  This was my first Death Race, and what a wild journey it turned out to be! PREPARATIO...
